Abstract
I do not have any artistic talent; I am a developer. How many times have you heard this before? Perhaps it was you that made this statement. Today's GUI development demands a certain sense of style that many developers lack. In this article, Jeff covers tools and basic tips to aid an artistically challenged developer in creating Crystal Reports that are professional and usable with the help of detailed explanations followed by relevant screen shots. Towards the end of the article, he examines a few design specifics such as Margins, Templates, and Dynamic Images. |

| Introduction |
Designers are not born with this skill; they learn it just
as programmers learn to program. This article will expose developers to
techniques that designers use to create GUI's that are aesthetically pleasing
to users. Reports are often thought of as the GUI to information, but they are
much more. Reports are a representation of a product, a point in time, or even
an employee. Reports should be pleasing to the user's eye, even if they contain
data that will upset the user. Techniques in this article will be applied to
Crystal Reports, but the concepts and tools can be applied to most GUI's.
Disclaimer -I by no means call myself a designer, but have been trapped as many
developers are by being asked to deliver reports to clients that contain
complex logic and look as if they could be hung in a museum next to a Dega.

Figure 2 probably should be set up with the Unit Cost being decimal justified... much easier to read.

Great article. Very concisely offers practical tips and tools that are easily accessible. The abstract clearly indicates this is not an article for beginners, but if a beginner reads the article with that understanding, they could still some useful concepts to keep in the back of their mind as they go through more basic training (i.e., a basic reader should be able to follow most of the article). I'll have my staff read it.
