ASP.NET 1.1 Insider Solutions is a great book specifically written for advanced developers in mind. It doesn’t teach you ASP.NET from scratch, but it shows you how to achieve complex tasks with the help of relevant screenshots and source code.

Chapter 1 examines the tips and tricks involved with Web Forms and DataGrids. The authors also provide short notes and important concepts under the heading “Best Practices.” Cross-page posting issues are covered in Chapter 2, which also includes an explanation about the Server.Transfer and Server.Execute methods.

If you have purchased this book then you should examine Chapter 3 completely. This is because this chapter explains how to display a “Please Wait” message during the loading of a page. The authors cover almost all the concepts related to this issue. With little effort, you can implement this technique in your own projects. You will also learn how to display a progress bar and many other advanced concepts. You will not find solutions to these tricky issues in any other book.

Chapter 4 covers the aspects involved with nested list controls in an elaborate manner. Part II (Chapter 5-9) completely examines user controls and reusability aspects, and the last chapter of this part explains about page templates.

Part III covers core database concepts. Chapter 10 handles the relational data handling techniques such as using parameters with SQL Statements & Stored Procedures. Chapter 11 entirely covers XML and databases; this chapter begins with a brief description of the role of XML in ASP.NET. The authors examine the various classes included with the .NET Framework for handling XML with the help of examples. You will also learn how to search, filter, and sort XML data with the help of relevant source code in addition to other advanced issues.

The final part deals with hosting and security aspects. One of the interesting aspects of this book is that the chapter “Side-by-Side Execution in ASP.NET” examines the impact of installing the different versions of .NET Framework on a system with the help of code samples. It also explains various other issues involved with IIS and Windows 2003 with the help of relevant screenshots. While Chapter 13 examines the different aspects of forms authentication, the final chapter ("Customizing Security") deals with building a custom authentication module and other related advanced topics.

You can view a live demo of all the sample applications and download the complete source code of all the examples discussed on this book by visiting this URL: http://www.daveandal.net/books/6744/default.asp.

This book is a good addition to user group libraries and computer learning centers.
