I had to convert the Sample Code to the 2005 version upon opening the solution. After the conversion, I got an error saying "No overload for method "Load" takes 2 arguments. This is where the error occurs, it's inside the GetStatesXMLString method in the CountryStateXML.cs file. transformToCountryNode.Load(new XPathDocument(HttpContext.Current.Server.MapPath("~/xmlxsl/CountriesAndStates.xsl")).CreateNavigator(), new XmlUrlResolver());
Does anyone know how to resolve this? Thanks a lot. Great article.

Hi, I haven't used Ajax before, and I read your article carefully. I then tried to implement and adapt this code for two dropdown lists in my ASP.net project. I do all the steps as mentioned here, i don't get any error but onchange of the countries dropdown list, CountryListOnChange() isn't fired. I think that i have to take some further steps before using Ajax, like downloading some kind of framework or adding a dll, or some king of script in my aspx page or in my web.config file, but i'm not clear how to proceed. Please could you send me an email in this address: erisa85d@gmail.com. I would really really appreciate it. Thanks in advance, Erisa

Is it possible to have 4 dropdownlists? 1 for world regions, 1 for country list or each region, 1 for state lists for each country and 1 for cities for each state. If there are no states, then the country becomes the state. And some states have only 1 city, like Singapore and Vatican. Anybody who can do it may email me at rajska7@gmail.com. Thanks

It's really a good example. But I'm facing a small problem.
I have 3 dropdowns. dd1, dd2 and dd3. Based on dd1, dd2 will fill and based on dd2, dd3 will fill.
It's population values properly.
While storing values in the database, dd2.selectedvalue is giving 0.
Can you please help me in this problem.
Thanks & Regards, Sri Rama Krishna G

How to get the state value from dropdown box (ANSWER!!!)
Name:
sekar
Date:
9/5/2006 12:39:25 PM
Comment:
Please use the name of the control to get the value in the server side (not using id) thru request.form
eg. request.form["fvFranchiseContract$ddlBusinessArea"]
This is the tag generated by the program.
select name="fvFranchiseContract$ddlBusinessArea" id="fvFranchiseContract_ddlBusinessArea"
I tested this and its working fine. I hope this will answer for the most of the people who asked datalost question in the serverside.
please mail me @ ssekar76@hotmail.com if u have any doubt.
thanks sekar

I am seeing a lot of people here praising this article, I guess they never bothered trying the code to see that it is useless because the populating the drop down list on the client side makes the SelectedValue empty on post back because the new values are unknown to the view state. Some people brought this point but nobody bothered reading them! I wonder where the author is!

What Mr. Karampelas told is correct. Everybody is telling it is a good article. Of course I am appreciating the effort. But try to add a button and on 'click event' of that try to access the selectedValue of the second combo which is populated by Ajax. All the values will be cleared and you cant access any of the values.

Good Article.. However If like me you dont to write and debug your code, go to http://www.telerik.com. and have a look at their "call back control" I am using it almost daily and it never fails me. It can intergrate with nearly any ASP.NET control, and you can even invent your own call backs using their generic Call back control. Its a bit pricey @$399, but worth every penny.

Excellent read! Thank you! One quick suggestion/enhancement: You will notice that after the page loads the first time you try to change countries (ex: India to USA), the states list takes a while to change. You can speed this up considerably by adding the CountryListOnChange() method to the body onload event.

Hi Mr. Karampelas,
If you need to add a button then you would need to do a postback. HOw can you add a button without postback? So once postback is done, you can access all the values, the next time when you click the button.

Though this is a nice article for displaying AJAX usage, it is not useful in a real world application. If you add a button in your page and try to get the SelectedValue of the second DropDownList you will always get nothing. That is because the server does not recognize the values that have been dynamically added...
If there is a solution to this or if I made a mistake in my tests, feel free to e-mail me at el98044@hotmail.com

Problem with listboxes using Ajax
Name:
Nils Gruson
Date:
9/22/2005 9:58:15 AM
Comment:
Good article, it works pretty good. I adjusted the sample a bit. Instead of comboboxes, I used two listboxes for the countries and states. The SelectionMode of the state listbox is Multiple, so the user can select multiple states. I also added a button to process the selected state. The problem is that stateList.SelectedIndex returns -1. The click of the button causes a postback, so the selected item is lost. Can someone help me with this?
How to reproduce the problem: - Select 'USA' in the country listbox. - Select 'Florida' in the state listbox. - Click 'Add'. - The SelectedIndex of the state listbox returns -1.

Get the data from DB, convert the data into a string with delimiter and write it into response stream. At client side parse the string using java script. To get the data at client side, use the property responseText instead of responseXML. Thanks, Sanjay

This article clearly explains AJAX framework.
If Javascript is disabled by the browser the site will not work, in that case, the browser must do a postback or inform the client to enable javascript on the browser.
Some suggestions: 1. More live examples are required where AJAX can be used. For eg: In MSDN web site, explorer style navigation can use AJAX to avoid a refresh every time + is clicked. (expand/collapse)
