Introduction

If you are a web developer or are involved in web development work then you will know how important HTML5 is as it contains lot of new improvements and tags to create rich compelling websites. SitePoint, a division of O'Reilly, publishes books which provide comprehensive coverage of the topic with the help of a real world project. HTML5 and CSS3 for the Real World is their latest book which thoroughly examines the features of two new compelling technologies for the creation of rich user friendly websites - HTML5 and CSS3.

Inside the Book

The book begins with a short chapter which provides a basic introduction to HTML5 and CSS3. Chapters 2 and 3 examine the new tags in HTML5 and Semantics with the help of a sample website titled HTML Herald.

While Chapter 4 examines the relevant tags for the creation of forms, Chapter 5 enables you to embed audio and video into your HTML5 webpage. The authors provide a brief introduction to CSS3 in Chapter 6 followed by the usage of advanced concepts such as Gradients, Multiple backgrounds, Transforms and Transitions.

The final three chapters examines the usage of embedded fonts, multicolumn layouts, geolocation, offline web applications including HTML5 application cache, Web storage, Canvas API, SVG Filters including the usage of Raphael library and the techniques involved in drag & drop mechanism in CSS3. The book includes three appendixes which cover Modernizer, WAI-ARIA and role of Microdata in HTML5.

The book will be only useful for those web developers who have prior knowledge in HTML 4 as it only covers new features of HTML5 and CSS3. I would suggest beginners to refer to a book which examines HTML 4 completely before investing for this book.

Conclusion

The book will be ideal for web development courses spanning 5-6 months duration. I would prefer to see a chapter which examines few Content Management Systems which are compatible with HTML5 and a cheat sheet which outlines all the important HTML5 tags along with a short description including an appendix which examines the fundamentals of HTML 4 as it will help beginners a lot.
