Introduction
There are just a few steps to get up and going. Community Server is a rich knowledge management and collaboration platform designed to meet the the most rigorous collaborative needs. Community Server is perfect for setting up a support system for products, reporting, and general information management by organizations or individuals.
I have installed a lot of products and very few were as easy to get up and going as Community Server 1.0. In just a few minutes you will have your very own Community Site.
Installation Instructions
Step 1 - Download files, FTP files to server
- Register and download Community Server from www.communityserver.org.
- You should know the following database information before getting started. You will get this from your hosting provider when you sign up. Please contact your hosting provider about your SQL Server credentials. You will enter your database information when using the web-installer.
- Name of the database.
- Name of the database server.
- Username for the database.
- Password for the database
- You need to copy the necessary files and folders to your remote server. You will need to FTP all the files and folders from the Web directory. By default, the Community Server download should have all the necessary files located in a folder named Web.
Step 2 - Enable the Web-Installer
- Follow the step-by-step instructions located under "Enable Installer" here: http://docs.communityserver.org/default.aspx/CS.WebBasedInstaller
This will be done only for the initial install.
Step 3 - Run the Installer
- After enabling the installer in Step 2, go to your website either by IP Address (http://x.x.x.x/installer/) or domain name (http://YourDomain.com/installer/)
- 2. Follow instructions located under the Detailed Steps at this link http://docs.communityserver.org/default.aspx/CS.WebBasedInstaller
You will use the database login information gathered in Step 1.
Step 4 - Run and Enjoy
- In your web browser, go to the root of your website and enjoy. You will be required to log in for administrative features. Use the username and password you set up while installing Community Server.
Note: To run in a sub-folder:
- When your install has completed, send an email to your hosting provider and request write permissions on the 'blogs' and 'photos' directories.
- Community Server can also be installed in a sub-folder of your site (http://YourDomain.com/subFolder). Just send an email to your hosting provider's support department to mark the folder as an application.

Thanks for the nice comments about the article. Regarding the error you are receiving. I'm not sure but found a good post at this link. http://blog.danbartels.com/articles/695.aspx I would verify with your hosting provider they have your site configured to use 1.1 .NET vs. 1.0. I would also make sure all the files from the /web folder has been upload and the I_USR and NETWORK SERVICE user have execute to this folder. Hope that helps.

Excellent and clear instructions - however, I have been trying to install Community Server but can't get past getting the installer to work - at this point, all of the community server files are in a subdirectory (that has been enabled as a web app on the remote server discountasp.net) - now the browser says the error:
Critical Error: SiteUrls.Config
The file containing the SiteUrl Data could not be loaded
Any ideas? I have gotten little help from the CS website to date -

I'm sorry to hear you are having problems getting Community Server 1.0 up and going. If I understand your frustration is with ASP.NET 2.0? The article is targeted for someone who is deploying using .NET framework 1.1. I'm not sure if they have even released a version of Community Server for ASP.NET 2.0 (which is still in beta). I would check their website at http://www.communityserver.org for 2,9 version. I briefly looked and was unable to locate anything about ASP.NET 2.0 and Community Server.

I am struggling to get this shitty community server running all day... The problem is the web.config, which seems not to work with version 2.0 B Finish out I forget about this bullshit community server...

Thanks for the nice comments. From what you're describing, if this is IIS 6 then the *default* user that would need write permissions would be the NETWORK SERVICE. If this IIS 5 then it would be IUSR_. Make sure there the /photos and /blogs directories have write folder permissions. Another place to check out for help is http://www.communityserver.org/forums/ Lots of help there too. Good luck.

Thanks for the clear instructions.
However: no matter how precise i follow them - I still keep having problems: the pictures in the photogallery don't show up; they are (as I can see when clicking 'show original') but I get just the small red-cross.
I used the installation scripts without problem. No idea if the following points have anything to do with it, but I mention them enyway:
* When I try to 'manage galleries' i get a message that i don't have write-access to the gallery directory. Which directory and what access is meant here? The asp.net machine account has (for the time being) read-write access to the whole CS structure. Is some other account meant?
Could it be that asp.net uses a different account to access files? Like IUSR?
* I use 2 urls's to point to the same structure, since I am behind a router in such a way that i cannot use the public name, only a private name. So, the second url is 192.168.1.1/CS and i used the appropriate SP to add it.
Can you help? I'd be very grateful,

You're welcome. The two problems you're describing about can't setup a blog or photogallaries is more than likely due to the fact "ASPNET" user account doesn't have write permissions on these two directories. I wasn't able to find these instructions on the website but they are in the "readme.txt" file when you download CS 1.0. I found some very good detail help on this link (http://docs.communityserver.org/default.aspx/CS.WelcomeToCommunityServer ). Hope this helps get things up and going for you.
'Here is what the Readme.txt file says.
Optional, but recommended:
- Grant ASP.Net write access to the root/blogs and root/photos folders

Hi, Thanks for that installation guide I actually have installed CS but I don't know how to better use it and get use of blogs and photogalleries I couldn't assign each user a separate blog , up to my knowledge that the CS is the next to .Text blogs so could you please tell me how to get the best usage of CS in my org. ,
